Advancing the public health workforce to achieve organizational excellence
2021 Revision of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

Public health practice and academic organizations rely on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) to guide their workforce development efforts. To ensure that the Core Competencies stay current with developments in the field of public health and continue to meet the needs of the workforce, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) regularly reviews and revises the Core Competencies.

The most recent review and revision of the Core Competencies began in October 2020 and concluded with adoption of the 2021 version of the Core Competencies on October 21, 2021.

Feedback on the Core Competencies

Revision of the Core Competencies is heavily informed by feedback from the public health and population health community. Feedback was received over the past year and used to draft revisions to the Core Competencies.

Initial feedback to inform the revision of the Core Competencies was received from October 2020-March 2021 and focused on the types of revisions to the Core Competencies that may be needed to help to ensure the Core Competencies continue to reflect the reality of public health and support and enhance organizational performance.
