NPHPSP "Version 2" Instruments, Streamlined and Updated for 2007

The first step toward a high-performing public health system or board of health just got even easier. In the upcoming weeks, the CDC and National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) partners will launch a fitter and trimmer "Version 2" of the popular NPHPSP instruments.  In response to user feedback and careful data analysis, the three performance assessment instruments have been streamlined and shortened the number of questions by about one-third.  (Yes, that's right, a third.)  The Program found that fewer required questions did not lessen the effectiveness of the Instruments, which should be great news for many boards of health and state and local public health systems that have been contemplating the assessment but were concerned about the length.

    New Quality Improvement Resources

      Public Health Memory JoggerTMII.
The Public Health Foundation has teamed up with GOAL/QPC to develop a public health version of the popular quick reference guide to quality improvement tools, the Memory Jogger TMII. Quality Progress Magazine (ASQ, June 2007) named the Memory JoggerTMII one of the top 10 books for every quality professional's library.  Read more..

      Performance Management Training DVD.
This 30-minute DVD is a great tool for introducing performance management and quality improvement basics to anyone in public health.  At your next leadership or management meeting, try showing the DVD and using the self-assessment tool to identify ways you can better manage performance.

Watch a 5-minute Tutorial on Finding Quality Improvement Resources.
A new online tutorial provides public health professionals with an orientation to finding quality improvement resources through PHF's Public Health Infrastructure Resource Center.  (Takes a minute to load.  Turn on your computer speakers to listen to narration.)

Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Launches Resource Page for Public Health.
PHF has partnered with IHI to create a public health page on IHI's website.  This page provides access to a special collection of resources and content from IHI's work in healthcare quality improvement that can help public health leaders and staff bring quality improvement to their programs and organizations.  Relevant resources cover topics such as improving chronic conditions, clinic flow, access to care, HIV/AIDS, and leadership for system improvement.

Opportunities for Performance Standards with Accreditation

With accreditation on the horizon for public health agencies at the national and state levels, there has never been a better time to use the National Public Health Performance Standards as a tool for improvement.  Now is the time to establish a baseline on the performance of your state or local public health system or board of health and shore up gaps that may underlie population health problems.

    Accreditation-Related Resources

    • Resources from the "Multi-State Learning Collaborative II" (MLC-2).
The "MLC-2: Exploring Quality Improvement in the Context of Assessment and Accreditation Programs" website offers summaries of activities and quality improvement projects in the ten participating states - Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Washington.  The site also contains presentations and additional "guest state" summaries from this summer's MLC-2 Open Forum in New Orleans.  The MLC-2 is managed by the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) and the Public Health Leadership Society.  The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) sponsors the program.

    • Free Journal Issue on Accreditation in Public Health.
Read a commentary and a corresponding checklist of potential strategies to build quality improvement into voluntary accreditation.

    • "Building Blocks for Public Health: Connecting Standards and Accreditation."
