Let Your Voice Be Heard! - Comment on the New Draft Core Competencies Today

Initial efforts to update the original set of Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) focused on Tier 2 (managerial level) Public Health Professionals. Tier 2 Core Competencies were adopted by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice in June 2009. More recently, drafts of Core Competencies for Tier 1 (entry level) and Tier 3 (directors/leadership level) Public Health Professionals have been developed. A public comment for the draft Tier 1 and Tier 3 Core Competencies is underway. Visit the Core Competencies feedback site today to provide your comments. The public comment period will end on December 31, 2009.

Using TRAIN as a Vehicle to Teach Public Health to Minority Undergraduates

PHF, in collaboration with CDC and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), has been working on a pilot project aimed at increasing the number of minority undergraduate students who pursue a career in public health. FAMU, a prominent historical black college and university, has both a division of public health and other health related schools. Utilizing TRAIN, the premier learning management system for professionals responsible for protecting the public's health, the PHF-TRAIN team is working with FAMU to implement an outreach plan that will increase interest in public health education and training, and, ultimately in career choices.

For more information about TRAIN and/or the minority outreach project with FAMU, please contact Michelle Clausen at 202-218-4425 or mclausen@phf.org.

    National Handwashing Awareness Week

Did you know that National Handwashing Awareness Week is just around the corner? This year, December 6 - 12 will mark National Handwashing Awareness Week, a campaign aimed to spread the word about the prevention of infectious diseases, particularly by practicing a few simple steps: 1) washing your hands when they are dirty and before eating, 2) sneezing and coughing into your arm rather than your hand, and 3) not putting your fingers in your nose or mouth. To support National Handwashing Awareness Week, PHF's Learning Resource Center has hand hygiene buttons and posters available for immediate delivery. Use coupon code CTLG10 at checkout for 10% off any hand hygiene item in your next order. This limited-time offer expires 12/31/09.
