For a limited time, PHF is offering states the ability to become part of the TRAIN Community for one full year for only $25,000 (a $30,000 discount). What public health activities and services were provided most often by Local Health Departments (LHDs) in 2008? The answer to this question and many more can be found in the 2008 National Profile of Local Health Departments, released at the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) annual conference in July 2009. The 2008 Profile is based on survey responses from over 83% of U.S. LHDs and includes information on LHD governance, finances, workforce, services and activities, emergency preparedness, community health, and other topics related to local public health infrastructure and practice. Researchers interested in obtaining Profile data can fill out a data request application form. Printed copies of the 2008 Profile can be purchased in the NACCHO bookstore.
A recent survey found that over half of responding National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) users, who completed the Version 2 assessment between September 2007 and March 2009, were active in preparing for performance improvement and developing action plans as a result of participating in the NPHPSP. Moreover, many users cited the NPHPSP User Guide and the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) tool as resources that are supporting and guiding their improvement efforts. Initiated in 1998, the NPHPSP aims to improve the quality and performance of public health systems. Three NPHPSP assessment tools (for state and local public health systems and public health governing bodies) have been used by over 1,200 sites around the country. Visit the NPHPSP Online Resource Center to find additional tools that can help public health systems and boards of health improve their performance related to Essential Public Health Services and the national standards.
The National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) assessment can serve as a valuable preparatory and complementary tool to the emerging national voluntary accreditation program for state and local health departments. Moreover, the NPHPSP is mentioned in the most recent version of the accreditation standards as a tool to assist in mobilizing partnerships (Domain 4) and developing health improvement plans (Domain 5). Visit the Public Health Accreditation Board’s website to view the newly-revised accreditation standards adopted for Beta testing.
