In response to an aging public health workforce and emerging worker shortages, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council) is working on two initiatives to help public health systems identify programs to better recruit and retain workers:

  1. Compiling Evidence on Effective Recruitment and Retention Strategies from Public Health and Other Fields
  2. Call for Abstracts: 2005 Linkages Award Focuses on Workforce Supply

1. Compiling Evidence on Effective Recruitment and Retention Strategies
To learn how the teaching profession and other fields have addressed worker shortages, the Council convened a forum on January 25, 2005 to discuss evidence on effective strategies to recruit and retain workers.

Are you involved in a partnership between an academic institution and a public health agency or organization? Have you worked together to encourage people to pursue public health careers? Would you like the chance to win up to $1,000 and the opportunity to present your efforts at a national conference? If so, apply for the 2005 Linkages Award.

Through this annual award, the Council recognizes exemplary community-based collaborative activities between public health practice agencies and institutions of higher learning. This year’s award is focused on efforts to better recruit and retain public health workers.

**Public Health Systems Research Interest Group

Join the Public Health Systems Research Interest Group on Saturday, June 25, 2005—held in conjunction with the 2005 Annual AcademyHealth Research meeting in Boston—to hear research findings on studies that can inform policymakers and practitioners as they make decisions about public health systems. The Interest Group grew out of the Council’s Public Health Systems Research Leadership Forum.

**Surgeon General Convenes Global Health Summit

On Sunday, June 5, U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona is convening a Global Health Summit in Philadelphia to solicit input on his Call to Action on Global Health, a precursor to his much-anticipated Report on Global Health. Among other topics, the Summit will discuss the impact of impending public health workforce shortages on global health, and the role of academic, public, and private partnerships in overcoming international health challenges.
