1. THIRD ANNUAL NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH LEADERSHIP FORUM NOMINATES RESEARCH PRIORITIES

The results are in.  Participants at the Third Annual National Public Health Systems Research Leadership Forum convened during the 2003 annual American Public Health Association meeting:

  • Learned about the development of national research agendas in public health systems research, workforce, and rural health;
  • Provided feedback on research priorities;
  • Ranked the research priorities in each agenda and identified research questions that remain to be answered; and
  • Engaged in discussions with panelists about plans to solicit feedback from the public health community and develop and implement the research agendas.

2. ACADEMIC/PRACTICE PARTNERSHIPS PAY OFF

2004 Annual Linkages Awards Deadline for abstracts: April 9, 2004.  For more information about the Linkages Awards visit: http://www.phf.org/Link/linkages.htm#awards [Note: Currently displays 2006 Linkages Awards Winners.] 

Does your local or state public health agency or organization engage in collaborative activities with academic institutions?  How about joint population-based activities in research, technical support, education, and training?  Interested in cash awards or the opportunity to present your efforts at a National conference?  If so, submit an abstract about your collaborative activities for the 2004 Annual Linkages Awards, sponsored by the Council.  Authors of winning abstracts must present a poster at either the National Association of County and City Health Officials 2004 annual meeting on July 14-16, 2004 in St. Paul, MN or the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials 2004 annual meeting on September 28 - October 1, 2004 in St. Paul, MN.

Winners will receive: First Place $1,000 Second Place $500 Third Place $250

3. USE OF CORE COMPETENCIES ON THE RISE

The type and amount of Core Competencies efforts initiated by the academic and practice communities in the U.S. and abroad are on the rise.  That's the message the Council heard at the 2003 annual American Public Health Association meeting in San Francisco, CA, during a session entitled, Core Competencies: A Roadmap for Action.  Looking for ideas, tools, training and examples of how to improve the public health skills and competencies of public health workers and students in your organization?  Visit the Core Competencies website at http://www.phf.org/competencies.htm for more information about and examples of Core Competencies use.  Interested in competencies based training?  Visit www.train.org to search for more than 600-distance learning and onsite courses by the Core Competencies.

We are pleased to announce that the Third Public Health Systems Research Affiliate Meeting will be hosted by AcademyHealth with partial support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday, June 5, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.  The Affiliate meeting will be held in conjunction with AcademyHealth's Annual Research Meeting at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego, CA.

Registration for the Annual Research Meeting is not required to attend the Public Health Systems Research Affiliate Meeting.
