COUNCIL ON LINKAGES CONVENES PUBLIC HEALTH FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS TO ADVANCE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH

Responding to recommendations in the Institute of Medicine's report, "The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century," the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice is actively advancing public health systems research that will lead to an expanded evidence base for public health practice.  During the Council's recent meeting, leaders from more than 20 national, federal, state, and local agencies and organizations, academic institutions, and foundations came together to determine ways to develop: 1) a national public health systems research agenda that is informed by the practice community; 2) Centers of Excellence for conducting this type of research; and 3) a fellowship program to help "grow" the pool of researchers in this field.

Meeting participants have committed to taking specific actions that will advance public health systems research.  For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended convening a national meeting between federal agencies including CDC, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to develop strategies to promote, support, and fund efforts leading to an increase in public health systems research.  These four agencies agreed to participate in such a meeting.  For a full list of organizational commitments to public health systems research, please visit http://www.phf.org/link/phsr/Public_Organizational_Committments.pdf.
