Do you feel that there is a lot of public health research being conducted
on health related issues, but not enough about the public health system? Ever
imagined what you might do differently if you were in charge for just one day?
Well, here is your chance to speak up about what you think our nation's public
health systems research priorities should be. In this session, you will have an
opportunity to:
- learn more about the development of national agendas in public health
research, public health systems research, workforce, and rural health;
- nominate new research priority areas;
- choose which priority areas you think are most important; and
- dialogue with the panelists about their current and future plans to
solicit feedback from the public health community and develop and implement
the agendas.

2. DO THE CORE COMPETENCIES NEED A CHECK-UP?
Core Competencies: A Roadmap for Action
November 18, 2003, 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.
APHA session #4016.0
Building on a decade of work in the area of competencies and over one
thousand comments from the field, the Council released the Core Competencies
for Public Health Professionals in 2001. Since then, a lot has happened in
public health. After eight new core content areas in public health, two new
Institute of Medicine reports, and a few years of experience using the Core
Competencies, is it time for the competencies to be revised? In this special
working session sponsored by the Council, participants will discuss:
- how the Core Competencies are being used;
- how they could be made more useful or usable;
- how the Council and Council member organizations might better facilitate
their use; and
- if funding is available for the Council to revise the Core Competencies
in 2004, what approaches can or should be used to obtain feedback and buy-in
throughout the revision process?
