Title: Developing a Public Health Practice Research Agenda

Presenters: Mr. Ron Bialek, Public Health Foundation
Dr. Hugh Tilson, Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice

Goals/Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how public health research can benefit the practice of public health
  • Identify current research gaps and needs using Healthy People 2010 Objectives for the Nation
  • Learn how to incorporate community health needs into emerging research agendas
  • Invite participation on refining a framework for developing a national public health practice research agenda and ensuing policy
  • Description of Issue/Importance to Conference Theme:
For many years, the public health practice community has been frustrated by the apparent disconnect between research studies and practice needs.  Where research exists which has application in community settings, it often is not adequately translated or disseminated in a manner to facilitate its application.  In addition, an insufficient amount of research in the fields of health and medicine focuses on human behavior, an area of critical importance to public health.  There also is a strong perception that the current research agenda is driven by resources, rather than identified needs in communities.  Too often, potential users of research at the community level are not involved in identifying information gaps or in establishing research priorities.

This presentation forum is similar to ones being conducted at various meetings, including the 1999 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting, with the intention for the participants’ feedback and experiences to form the building blocks in crafting actual national level policy on public health practice research.

Description of Method to Facilitate Interactive Discussion:
After initial presentation of the Critical Issues, participants will be divided into 3 groups to discuss specific research gaps and needs for helping to attain specific Healthy People 2010 Objectives for the Nation.  Afterwards, participants will reconvene to discuss each groups’ findings and participate firsthand in refining the research agenda and its framework.
