ACADEMIC PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES
APHA Special Session - Results
November 19,1998

Why are academic health departments a good idea?

¨ Develop a clear description of the problem(s) that can be addressed by academic health departments.
¨ Describe the impact such departments can make on issues such as critical thinking, problem identification and evaluation, student training, etc.

Define and characterize academic health departments

¨ Review the Association of Schools of Public Health Strong Schools, Strong Partners report.
¨ Develop a simple survey to discover and catalog those community health agencies that consider themselves to be academically oriented. Target the survey for distribution by national professional association newsletters (NACCHO, NALBOH, SOPHE, NACHC, AHEC, etc.).

Develop a similar survey for state health departments distributed through ASTHO.

¨ Pursue the idea of including appropriate questions in the NACCHO local health department profile survey (note- possible, but more difficult).
¨ Check with Dr. Barney Turnock, who has already documented some former written agreements between academic and practice sites.
¨ Consider involving national student associations in the effort.
¨ Consider using the example or benefits gained from academic hospitals as justification for developing academic public (community) health practice sites.

Develop a "How To" compendium

¨ List what is known about the critical elements required to develop academic/practice linkages.
¨ Develop a list of "best practices", case studies, etc.
¨ Develop a clear description of benefits and costs.

Create a supportive environment

¨ Approach Dr. William Harlan and Dr. Norman Anderson at NIH about research funding that would include practice sites.
¨ Consider creative ways to tap funding available at CDC, HRSA local and national foundations, etc.
¨ Promote national forums on the subject at APHA, Prevention 2000, NACCHO, ASTHO SOPHE, NALBOH, etc.
¨ Pursue the idea of GME support for "teaching" community health agencies.
