Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice

Association of State and Territorial Health Officials

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), through supplementary funds received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will be working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to implement the Colorado and Rocky Mountain Regional Leadership Institute. This initiative is part of the CDC cooperative agreement program to strengthen the public health system by effectively translating the essential public health services into practice.

The Leadership Institute will bring together the resources of the University of Denver, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the University of Northern Colorado. According to Lee Thielen, one of the organizers of the program, the purpose of the Institute is to train a new generation of health and environmental leaders, and to create a network of professionals who might not ordinarily not have a chance to work together.

The year-long Institute, scheduled to begin in July, is patterned after similar regional leadership institutes started by CDC around the country. The curriculum will focus on politics in public health, risk communication, and the use of community resources, among other issues. ASTHO will participate in on-site meetings with CDPHE and together evaluate the critical success factors necessary for model replication.
