Title: Meeting the Challenge of
"Competency Based" Distance Learning
Objectives:
- By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Describe potential applications of the Core Competencies for Public Health
Professionals to improve distance learning.
- Identify specific ways distance learning providers can help meet Healthy People 2010
objectives to provide more competency-based continuing education for public health agency
employees.
Abstract:
This interactive session will focus on ways to increase the
provision of "competency based" distance learning in public health. Public
Health Foundation staff will present a brief overview of the national workforce
development objectives to increase competency-based training in public health and recent
efforts to define competencies, such as the Core Competencies for Public Health
Professionals (Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health, April 2001). The
session will invite discussion among participants addressing questions such as: (1) How
can distance learning providers help the nation meet its Healthy People 2010 objective to
provide more competency-based continuing education for public health agency
employees? (2) What are the barriers to putting "competency based"
distance learning into action? (3) How can distance learning programs use the Core
Competencies for Public Health Professionals? What about the growing number of
discipline-specific competencies? (4) What practical strategies could help potential
learners and course developers know what competencies are covered by available distance
learning programs?
