Fifth Annual Public Health Systems Research Forum

For more than five years, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice has been working to raise awareness about the need to study vital questions concerning public health infrastructure. This year's session will provide an opportunity to highlight the progress the field has made. For example, researchers and research agendas have been identified and several recent funding initiatives will advance PHSR. This year's forum will serve as a "training session" to help researchers make the pitch for funding for PHSR. Representatives from funding agencies and foundations will present advice to assist researchers in connecting critical PHSR questions to funders' priorities.
A Dwindling Public Health Workforce: Are We Prepared to Act?

Recent studies suggest that the nation faces emerging public health worker shortages. This session will focus on strategies to improve worker recruitment and retention and will highlight some of the research the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice has compiled on the topic.
Performance Improvement: Effective Strategies for State and Local Public Health Systems

What does it take to improve performance in state and local public health systems? This session will focus on how diverse state and local jurisdictions have used the National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) and other state and local initiatives for performance improvement. For context, the session will compare performance improvement success factors identified in a 2005 evaluation of NPHPSP users to findings in other fields. Moderated by Liza Corso, the panelists are as follows:
