Academic health department (AHD) partnerships – formal partnerships between health departments and academic institutions – have the potential to enhance the capacity of the organizations involved and offer a variety of benefits.

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice and the Public Health Foundation held a webinar on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 from 1-2pm EST to explore the AHD partnership between the Pima County Health Department in Arizona and the University of Arizona (UArizona) Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

AHD Learning Community members Julia Flannery, BS, Organizational Development Program Manager for the Pima County Health Department, and Emily Waldron, MPH, Community Engagement and Outreach Coordinator, UArizona Zuckerman College of Public Health, joined the webinar to share this success story of an AHD partnership in action. Participants heard about the approach they used to determine collaborative project opportunities, the nuts and bolts of the growing partnership, and how joint expertise contributed to the foundational underpinning of a coordinated pandemic response in their community. Additionally, the presenters shared examples of how the AHD partnership played a vital role in the community response efforts and highlight plans for continued collaborations vitalized by the COVID-19 response experiences. Time was included for questions and discussion.
