Learn More about the New AHD Research Agenda Initiative at March 16th AHD Learning Community Meeting

Join the Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community for its next virtual meeting on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 12-1pm EDT to discuss the newest initiative of the Learning Community: a research agenda focused on the AHD model. This research agenda explores questions related to effectively measuring the value of AHD partnerships in enhancing public health and determining best practices critical to partnership success, and suggests opportunities for collaborative research on the structure, functions, and impacts of AHDs. During this meeting, AHD Learning Community member Paul Campbell Erwin, MD, DrPH, University of Tennessee Department of Public Health, who is leading the development of the AHD Research Agenda, will discuss the initial draft of the research agenda that has recently been completed, the process through which the research agenda is being developed, and the questions it contains. Feedback from participants that can guide the refinement of this research agenda is encouraged. Read the current draft of the AHD Research Agenda and plan to attend the meeting on March 16th to learn more. This meeting is open to all who are interested, but registration is required. Please visit the meeting webpage for more information and to register or contact Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org

Contribute to the Council on Linkages' Core Competencies Resources

Are you using the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies)? The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice is seeking examples of how health departments, academic institutions, and other organizations are integrating the Core Competencies into their work. Job descriptions that incorporate the Core Competencies, workforce development plans that include the Core Competencies, and other examples of Core Competencies use are currently being shared online, and new resources to add to these collections are invited from the broad public health community. Submit your examples to Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org today to highlight the excellent work of your organization and help support others in their workforce development efforts.

Explore Two Successful Academic Health Department Partnerships

Interested in developing an academic health department (AHD) or planning to expand your existing AHD? Learn from two AHD Learning Community members who shared their experiences at the most recent AHD Learning Community meeting, held in January 2016.  During the meeting, Vicki Collie-Akers, PhD, MPH, Associate Director of Health Promotion Research, University of Kansas, and Louise Kent, MBA, ASQ CQIA, Planning Administrator, Northern Kentucky Health Department, described the AHD partnerships in which their organizations engage and the process for establishing their partnerships, and shared benefits of academic/practice linkages and lessons learned from participating in AHD partnerships. In addition, both speakers shared valuable AHD resources, such as partnership agreements and resources for student learning experiences, which have been made available online. The meeting was archived and can be accessed online for those interested in learning more. Visit Developing, Sustaining, and Expanding AHDs: Case Studies of Successful AHD Partnerships in Kansas and Kentucky to watch the archive, download a copy of the presentation slides, or download the resources that were shared. Questions can be sent to Janelle Nichols at jnichols@phf.org

Council on Education for Public Health Proposed Criteria Revisions Open for Comment through May 16, 2016

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the accrediting body for schools and programs of public health, produces accreditation criteria for schools of public health, programs of public health, and standalone baccalaureate programs. CEPH is currently in the process of revising its graduate-level accreditation criteria and has considered feedback received from two rounds of public comments. This feedback was incorporated, where appropriate, and CEPH has released an updated draft of its proposed criteria revisions for public review and comment. This revision process is drawing on a variety of initiatives in the public health field, including the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, and comments are encouraged from practitioners, educators, and other members of the public health community. Comments that both agree and disagree with the proposed revisions are appreciated. Additional information about the proposed revisions and how to submit comments to CEPH is available on the CEPH website; comments are welcome through May 16, 2016. CEPH will consider this third round of comments at its June 16-18, 2016 meeting.
