Comments are being accepted on the draft Improving and Measuring the Impact of Training document until July 15, 2012. Developed by the Training Impact Task Force (Task Force), a group of experts in training and evaluation, this document is designed to assist trainers, public health organizations, and sponsors of training by providing strategies and methods to guide the training and evaluation process. When complete, it will also include links to tools and resources to help users implement the approaches identified.

Help the Task Force craft a strong guide to effective training by providing your feedback on the draft Improving and Measuring the Impact of Training document. Are the strategies and methods clear? Are any strategies missing? Do you know of relevant tools that should be included? Draft Core Competencies Tools Available for Public Comment

Two new tools designed to support use of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) are now available in draft form for public comment:"E.g.s" to Clarify the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and Examples Demonstrating Attainment of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals. Clarifying examples or "e.g.s" are meant to help explain the terminology or concepts in competency statements, further enhancing understanding of individual competencies. Examples illustrating how competence may be demonstrated can assist public health professionals and organizations in determining levels of competence.

Your feedback on these draft tools will help ensure that the resources developed facilitate understanding and use of the Core Competencies and are relevant to the practice of public health. Suggested revisions to the draft examples are welcome, as are additional examples to further enhance the tools. Comments are being accepted through July 31, 2012 and may be recorded on the tool webpages or emailed to Aleta Hong at ahong@phf.org

Public Health Foundation Names Future of Public Health Award Recipients

The Public Health Foundation (PHF) named the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Washtenaw County (MI) Public Health Department as the 2012 recipients of the Future of Public Health Award. The Award recognizes outstanding initiatives with measurable outcomes that will benefit the future of public health by applying quality improvement (QI) tools and techniques to entrenched public health challenges.

The winning entry from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, "Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Prevention Quality Collaborative in Long Term Care Project," will focus on reducing healthcare-associated infections in nursing home residents using QI tools and methods. Washtenaw County (MI) Public Health Department was selected for its proposal, "Prescription for Health: Enhancing Medical Clinic's Connection to the Local Food System." This initiative will focus on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption through tokens distributed by clinic staff and redeemable at local farmers markets. As recipients of the Future of Public Health Award, both health departments will receive up to three days of on-site technical assistance from PHF's experts to build QI capacity and advance their programs to improve outcomes in Winnable Battles
