TRAIN, the most comprehensive learning network for health professionals, offers access to thousands of training opportunities that support workforce development. Identifying trainings that are both appropriate and beneficial to the workforce can be challenging when looking at the course details. However, it may be helpful to review what courses the health workforce is registering for and completing as a whole for a glimpse of what topics and priorities others may be focusing on. In 2012, the top five courses completed on TRAIN that are nationally available are (in descending order):

  1. HIV/AIDS Professional Education in KY....Making It Count - Online Module (Course ID 1021131)
  2. KY DPH Civil Rights Training Module (Course ID 1020093)
  3. Effective Communication Tools for Healthcare Professionals 101 (with Continuing Education Credits) (Course ID 1010510)
  4. IS-700.a: Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) (Course ID 1016070)
  5. IS-100.b - Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100 (Course ID 1024627)

These courses span subject areas, ranging from emergency preparedness to cultural competency. Overall, TRAIN’s 29,000 courses from over 4,000 providers cover sixty separate subject areas.

TRAIN affiliates – agencies and organizations part of the TRAIN network who have funded the development of a customized portal – can develop and offer training plans that pair organization-specific classroom-based training with popular web-based courses available from other organizations in the network. Other organizations can utilize the Blended Learning Series course format to organize their own trainings and those offered by others into one combined course offering. By developing curriculums of study on TRAIN, agencies and organizations part of the TRAIN network can track progress across a set of courses, giving workforce development leaders an overview of workforce competence and gaps.

To explore available trainings on TRAIN that did not make the top five, utilize the Course Search. If your organization is interested in the Training Plan feature and becoming a TRAIN affiliate, contact the TRAIN Team.
