The Arc of the Forum – Opening, Keynote, and Closing Highlights
The Forum featured an exciting lineup of sessions, with the opening, keynote, and closing traveling the arc from where the public health workforce is today through identifying needs and strategies for addressing those needs to the future of public health workforce development in 2022 and beyond.
Judy Monroe, MD, President and CEO of the CDC Foundation, kicked off the event by exploring the Public Health Landscape 2021: Where Are We Now? Dr. Monroe provided her unique insights on the current state of public health and workforce development with her extensive experience in public health practice, healthcare, preparedness, and academia. She stated, “the pandemic has propelled the compelling case for change,” in support of the continued need for greater investment in public health.
In her keynote, Public Health Workforce Development: Addressing Needs, Admiral Rachel Levine, MD, Assistant Secretary for Health, emphasized the incredible efforts of the public health workforce throughout the pandemic. Dr. Levine noted the extensive challenges and needs facing the public health workforce and highlighted strategies being implemented at the federal level to address those needs.
Following Dr. Levine’s remarks, a panel of experts from across public health shared their reactions to her address and the issues she raised. This reaction panel, made up of leaders from federal, tribal, local, and non-profit public health organizations, provided their perspectives and practical experiences working in workforce development today and strategies they are using to tackle the identified needs.
The Forum wrapped up with a dynamic discussion of opportunities for workforce development led by a panel of three state and local health officials from across the United States. In the closing session, Public Health Landscape 2022 and Beyond: Where Are We Going?,
panelists shared their perspectives on overarching needs in public health workforce development and how these can be addressed, what inspires or scares them most as they look to the future of public health workforce development, and future opportunities they see for the TRAIN Learning Network to support their efforts.
Panelists also emphasized the invaluable asset that is the workforce in their jurisdictions. As Dr. Brookmyer stated, “our strength is really our people, and all of our outcomes and successes are due to the people that we have.”
