Performance management is a systematic process by which an organization involves its employees in improving the effectiveness of the organization and achieving the organization’s mission and strategic goals. By improving performance and quality, public health systems can save lives, cut costs, and get better results by managing performance.
In 2010, the Public Health Foundation created a short two-page primer on performance management in public health synthesizing information from a number of performance management resources, including From Silos to Systems: Using Performance Management to Improve the Public’s Health. The body of work from the Turning Point Performance Management National Excellence Collaborative can be found through typing in “Turning Point” in the quick search menu on the home page of the Public Health Improvement Resource Center.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a RFA in July 2010 titled, “Strengthening Public Health Infrastructure for Improved Health Outcomes.” This RFA requires grantees to ”designate or hire a full-time equivalent Performance Improvement Manager.” PHF created a sample job description to be helpful to applicants.
