​Rika Maeshiro, MD, MPH, currently works as a consultant on efforts to better integrate public health into medical education. Previously, she was the Director of Public Health and Prevention Projects at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where her responsibilities included serving as the deputy principal investigator for AAMC’s cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the principal investigator for the Regional Medicine-Public Health Education Center initiative, a grant program to improve population health, public health, and prevention content in medical education. 

Prior to joining the AAMC in 2002, Dr. Maeshiro worked in the Public Health Practice Program Office of the CDC, where her activities included early work in National Public Health Performance Standards and Bioterrorism Preparedness Planning. She has also worked at the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Environment, Safety, and Health at the U.S. Department of Energy. ​

Dr. Maeshiro is a 1987 graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, and she completed residency training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and in general preventive medicine/public health at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She is board-certified in general preventive medicine/public health. Her clinical practice had focused on primary care and HIV care in underserved inner city and rural areas.
