End Date: 10/31/2016

The public health workforce represents a critical component in ensuring the health of the population. Workforce development is a key part of health department accreditation, and numerous initiatives are driving progress toward an even stronger public health workforce for the future. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) brings together 22 influential public health organizations to highlight and take action on workforce development at a national level. With its recent adoption of Strategic Directions through 2020, the Council on Linkages has developed consensus on priority focus areas in an evolving field of public health. Come hear how these focus areas are guiding activity as the Council on Linkages moves into its 25th year and influence the translation of these overarching directions into action. This interactive session will offer the Council on Linkages’ perspective on improving performance within public health and engage participants in small group discussions related to two significant elements of the Council on Linkages’ support for the workforce: the Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community and the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). How can we better demonstrate the value of AHD partnerships between health departments and academic institutions? What impact does the development of population health and discipline-specific competency sets have on the Core Competencies? Weigh in on these and other questions and help guide how these initiatives evolve to ensure maximum benefit for the public health workforce. Questions, answers, suggestions, and discussion are welcome.
