Public Health Foundation is preparing to launch a new national training series, "Public Health Works"  that will benefit State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial (STLT) health department staff, health care personnel, community health professionals, and others.

The purpose of this series is to demonstrate how health departments and other public health organizations use evidence-based strategies and interventions and quality improvement methods to improve organizational performance and the health of the communities they serve. The inaugural program, Immunization Strategies: Using the Evidence and What Works to Improve Practice, will highlight evidence-based immunization strategies from the Community Preventive Services Task Force's (Task Force) findings and recommendations outlined in The Guide to Community Preventive Services (Community Guide) that have been successfully implemented by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health and their community partners.

Ray Strikas, MD, MPH, Medical Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and Lucy Wells, MAOM, DHA Candidate, Quality Manager with the Duval County Health Department in Florida will be the featured expert panelists, and  Hugh Tilson, MD, DrPH will be the moderator. Questions will be taken from STLT health department, health care, and community health professionals from across the country. Donna Davis, EdD, MPH is the executive producer. The program will launch in Summer 2012. Participants will be able to meet the following program objectives:
  • Describe how a local health department uses the Task Force's findings in the Community Guide to save resources and improve health outcomes.
  • Describe challenges to improving immunization rates in a community setting.
  • Identify two evidence-based strategies to increase immunizations.
  • Describe how quality improvement techniques apply to community immunization practices.

Refer to the Community Guide for programs and policies to improve health and prevent disease in your community.

Funding for this activity is being provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under CDC-RFA HM08-8050301SUPP10.
