Preparing the workforce to improve the health of our communities

National Preparedness Month Begins September 1!
September is National Preparedness Month (NPM) and this year's theme is "Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can." The goal of NPM is to increase the number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions at homes, workplaces, businesses, schools, and places of worship.

National Preparedness Month is divided into four weeks with focused themes for each:

  1. September 1-9: Make a Plan for Yourself, Family and Friends
  2. September 10-16: Plan to Help Your Neighbor and Community
  3. September 17-23: Practice and Build Out Your Plans
  4. September 24-30: Get Involved! Be a Part of Something Larger

Fun Fact:
In 2016, a preparedness course was taken, on average, every 7 1/2 minutes on the TRAIN Learning Network!

Resources for National Preparedness Month
  • Take part in America’s PrepareAthon!, a national community-based campaign that moves individuals from awareness to action by preparing for relevant hazards through group discussions, drills, and innovative communications-related products.

  • The American Red Cross offers a range of health and safety classes that teach new skills to make you knowledgeable and ready to respond in almost any emergency.

Tips for Using TRAIN During National Preparedness Month

  • If you're looking for topical learning, the "subject" filter on the left side of the course catalog will allow you to filter your search based on your subject of interest. Search using the "terrorism/emergency readiness" subject area during National Preparedness Month to access related trainings.

  • Looking for learning based on a competency or capability? TRAIN has you covered! Use the "competencies and capabilities" filter on the left side of the course catalog. To get you started, here is a pre-filtered search using the Public Health Preparedness Capabilities. If you wish to refine the filters further, click on the "competencies and capabilities" filter on the left side of the course catalog page.
