Revising the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

Public health practice and academic organizations rely on the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) to guide their workforce development efforts. To ensure that the Core Competencies stay current with developments in the field of public health and continue to meet the needs of the workforce, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) regularly reviews and revises the Core Competencies. The Council on Linkages initiated the current revision process on October 20, 2020 and anticipates releasing a revised version of the Core Competencies in October 2021.

Share Your Feedback on the Core Competencies
The Council on Linkages invites all members of the public health and population health community to share feedback on preliminary draft revisions to the Core Competencies. The preliminary draft revisions consist of two components:

Feedback may be shared with the Council on Linkages by:

Any feedback is welcome, including feedback on:
  • Anything you particularly like or dislike in the preliminary draft
  • Whether the concepts that are being added capture needed knowledge and skills
  • Whether the proposed structure would make it easier to use the Core Competencies
  • Training, tools, or other resources that would help you use the Core Competencies
Feedback is welcome through July 31, 2021.

Feedback Notes
Initial feedback to inform the revision of the Core Competencies was received from October 2020-March 2021 and focused on the types of revisions to the Core Competencies that may be needed to help to ensure the Core Competencies continue to reflect the reality of public health and support and enhance organizational performance.
