AHD Learning Community to Establish a Mentorship Program

In response to feedback from members, the Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community is establishing a mentorship program to provide support and guidance related to AHD partnerships. This program will help foster the development, maintenance, and expansion of AHDs by building relationships between individuals involved in AHD efforts. Planning for this program is well underway, with the most recent AHD Learning Community meeting providing an opportunity to discuss the purpose and structure of the program, as well as areas in which mentorship could be beneficial. Visit the PHF Pulse blog for an update on the AHD mentorship program, and share your questions and suggestions in the blog comments or by email to Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org.

Help Spread the Word about the Revised Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

With the adoption of the 2014 version of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) earlier this summer, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is working to ensure this updated version is shared with the broad public health community. A brief announcement about the revised Core Competencies is available for use in newsletters and other communications, virtual town hall meetings are being planned for this fall, and a session will be held at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in November. The Council on Linkages thanks all those who have assisted in disseminating the revised Core Competencies and welcomes additional opportunities for sharing information about the Core Competencies. Please contact Kathleen Amos at kamos@phf.org with any questions or suggestions.

CDC and ASPPH Present Special Issue of JPHMP Focused on Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, in collaboration with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, is pleased to present the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice (JPHMP) supplement, "Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers: Lessons and Models." This supplement highlights practical examples of the work of the Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers (PERLCs) toward improving the quality of and capacity for public health preparedness training and evaluation for the frontline public health workforce. Established in 2010, the PERLCs develop, deliver, and evaluate core competency-based training and education that address the public health preparedness and response needs of state, local, and tribal public health agencies. The PERLCs have collaborated with numerous partners, and the experience and lessons learned from these partnerships shine through many of the trainings and activities detailed in the supplement. The full supplement is freely available on the JPHMP website and through the JPHMP App in iTunes

Activities of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice are supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
